A Guide To Home Theater Equipment

People love their TVs; many people are buying new HD Televisions to enjoy high definition TV channels, DVD / Blu-ray Player and video games and can get a real thrill like being at the cinema. A lot of us may want to get the cinema effect in our own homes and it is entirely possible with the wide range of home audio and visual equipment available today.

This article will hopefully give you an idea of what you’ll need in order to setup your very own home theater, a home theater setup is not just all about the TV, whilst it does form a large part of it many people regard getting cinema quality surround sound as one of the major draws of home theaters.

HDTV or Projector?
A Plasma TV or LCD TV is typically what you’ll need for the visual part of your home theater, obviously the larger the screen the better the effect, TVs with 42-inch or bigger need to be HD models with a HD source such as a HD box from Sky or Virgin Media or a video games console like the Sony PS3. This should give you the best viewing experience but for the ultimate in home theaters if money is no object would be a High Definition Home Theater Projector which can be pointed at a screen or even a blank wall.

Amplifier or Audio/Video Receiver
Whilst TVs have good sound levels these days it still can’t compare to a dedicated audio setup. An Amplifier or A/V Receiver with surround sound speakers can really add a level of immersion in to a game of football on the TV or an action packed film that you’re watching. You should aim for amplifiers that support a wide range of audio technologies such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD, these sound signals are uncompressed high quality audio that is to audio what HD TVs are to video.

Speakers
With good quality speakers you should look at well known brands which have wide range, good tone and punchy bass. For bass tones you should look at a high quality sub woofer which can add a level of depth to the sound your setup puts out. There are typically two speaker arrangements 5.1 and 7.1 channel, the first number refers to the number of speakers and the .1 means a sub woofer. Obviously 7.1 is the more exhaustive option but you still get plenty of immersion with 5.1 setups too.

Many audio specialists will have test rooms and allow you to hear the sound and view the TV before buying so it’s worthwhile trying before you buy as home cinemas are expensive investments.
